Into the Forest!

Today we put on our bug spray, packed our backpacks and headed out to the forest for a nice hike.
We learned that the forest is full of God's gifts to us.
We looked at 4 different types of  wood.

We explored each type by touching, looking, and smelling.

We saw growth rings, and the different layers of bark.

We found out that trees not only provide shelter for creatures, but they also help provide shelter for people.

Everyone was super surprised to find out that paper comes from trees.

We made our own paper by recycling.

The product of blending old paper and natural pulp( from trees and cotton) is new paper!

We experimented with recycling some colorful papers.

The most fun of paper making is the mixing!

We also found out what happens when you mix red and blue!

Time to press and dry.

The piece on the right is ours!
We had a very successful day of paper making!
We even got really good and added flower petals to our pulp mixture.

I don't think playing in a tent ever gets old!

A break in the rain let us play in the river.

To end our day we worked with more sorting.

We sorted the sticks that we brought from home.

We looked closely at our sticks...

And then turned them into art!

During centers today, we found this little group acting out Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
They did a great job working together!

Dark Day!

It was day without lights at summer camp today!  I think they thought I had forgotten to turn them on until I pulled out the flashlights.  We even took lanterns to the potty!  They thought that was the funniest thing ever.

We started our day with a ABC star hunt.

We each found our special letter in the sky and shined it with our flashlights.

It was fun to find our own letter, and a friend's!

Then we read our book in the dark!

Our tools for the day...

We used little battery powered lights in the block center today.
This house has electricity!

These boys made a grill!  How cool is that???

We made a fun firefly craft with fingerprints.

And tried making shadow puppets in the tent.

Scientists!

Then for snack, we popped popcorn on the stove.

They told me that popcorn came in paper bags and went in the microwave! LOL

Time for our night-time movies.

A "Beary" Good Day At Camp!

Today we hiked deep into the forest, trying to find bears!  It was a "beary" good day at camp!

During morning choices, we explored animal tracks.

We saw many differences between the animals and the prints that their feet leave.

We also completed water color paintings inspired by nature.
B painted a snake that he had just seen!

Everyone brought their favorite teddy bear (bunny or dog) to camp today.
It was fun to meet each bear and find out how they are special.

We read the story of Goldilocks, then acted it out using puppets.

During centers, I noticed that C had made a sleeping bag for his bear.
S wanted one for her bear, but the extra one didn't fit her bear.

No problem, C was more than happy to teach S how he made the original sleeping bags.
We gave them bigger paper...

Which made for the perfect sized sleeping bag!

I also happened upon this bear wedding going on in the block center.

Can you see the steeple on the church?  and the additional seating for the black bear- must have been a cousin from out-of-town!  There was even a operational gate to keep the bears inside the church!

Campfire story time with Ms.Ashley.

Time for snack! We ate like bears today.  We used pretzel stick fishing poles, dipped them in icing, and tried to catch fish from the "pond".

Time to sort the bears.  First we sorted by size...

Then we sorted gummy bears by color. YUMM!
