Happy Birthday Johnny Appleseed!

Fall is here!  We are celebrating the season of harvest, first with apples!
We started apple fun day with apple pie baking.
Each child pressed 1/2 of a biscuit super flat  to make a bottom of our pies.
We used the small muscles in our hands to knead and spread the dough.

Next, we passed around the chopped apples and added them to our pies.
The boys and girls did such a wonderful job and have clearly mastered the skill of "take some and pass it".  Not the easiest concept for our little learners who are still, rightfully so, really focused on "ME"!

Then we added brown sugar and cinnamon.
The children followed our step-by-step directions and used their very best listening ears.

Time for a little pat of butter!

...And finally, the top to our pies.

While they cooked, we learned the legend of Johnny Appleseed and why he was thought to have worn a pot on his head!

We went on a Johnny Appleseed parade.  We wandered around the school, wearing our pots and pretending to spread our apple seeds.  Look closely, did you spot Johnny in our group picture???

Finally, we were treated to a wonderful apple party by this sweet little snack helper!

Apple trees, apple chips, ice cream with apple sauce, apple fritters, and apple juice.
It was another one of those "Best Day Evers" at preschool!

Grandparent's Day!

Last week at preschool, we learned about our families.  Grandparents are an important part of our families, and today was all about them!
We invited them to preschool for a special breakfast.

We wrote an acrostic poem for them.
Some of the highlights include:
"D" is for dirty- "They work in the yard and hardly EVER take a shower."
"Y" is for Yawn.  "They yawn a lot and snore".
"E" is for Eat.  "They take you to Highway 55 to eat."

It was so nice to treat our grandparents to a morning as special as they are!

Each child made a pot holder for their family.

They boys and girls did a wonderful job serving their grandparents and helping them through the line.

We had smiles for miles!

It was nice for the teachers to meet all of these Pops, and Mops, Nanas and Papas, Neenas and Pas.

Thank you all for joining us at preschool.

We even cleared the tables for our guests!

The children took their grandparents to our classroom for centers.
The loved showing them how we work and play at school.

Getting to Know You 2s!

We have had one full day of 2 year old preschool, but it was a busy one!
Lots of people ask, "What do you do at 2 year old preschool?", where here is just a glimpse.

We played in the sand.

We used school tools and wrote our special letters.

We cleaned up!?!

We used our small muscles to work with play-doh.

We took care of the babies.

We explored new textures.

We used school tools to complete an art project!

We made new friends :)

We worked in the kitchen!

I look forward to many more fabulous Fridays with this crew!

A Few of Our Favorite Things

Our Sunshine 3s are off to a wonderful start!  They are building community, learning new routines, and settling in nicely.  Each time I visit their classroom I am amazed at all they are doing so early in the year.  The first weeks of 3 year old preschool can be tricky, but not with this group!  It is partially the miracle of 2 year old preschool, combined with awesome teachers, and amazing children.

Here are a few of their favorite things...

We LOVE playing dress-up and using our imaginations to tell stories.

We LOVE playing in the sand at our sensory table.

This week Miss Ashley and Mrs. LeAnn  have the sensory table changing with the seasons.  The boys and girls will be filling the bucket of the tractor with fruits of the harvest, wild rice, popcorn kernels and fall colored pasta.

We LOVE reading, and dinosaurs!

We LOVE painting.

We LOVE our babies!

We really LOVE play-doh.  This week Miss Ashley is making fall-scented play-doh and adding pumpkins, sticks, and leaves to enrich the play here.

We LOVE playing outside.

And we LOVE fun snacks!

The Apple Market

As we mark the first days of fall at preschool, it is time to open our Apple Market.  Our dramatic play area changes throughout the year.  It begins as a house, which brings can bring comfort to some of our  more anxious preschoolers. Today, it became an Apple Market.

I set the stage with a few teacher made props ,including this open/closed sign. I also placed several varieties of apples there, with a simple balance, cash register, calculators, paper bags, pens, and paper.

As centers began, there were 14 children working in the area ( I must have done a good job introducing the new center!),  I have learned to wait, and give the children a chance to figure out for themselves that that is too many.

Soon enough, they began to drift away, and the children who stayed got involved in some very meaningful play.

We found 2 apples that weighed the same!

We found out that 2 apples weigh more than one.

As we shopped for apples, we realized that we needed money.  I find myself on both sides of this "real vs play vs use your imagination" fence.  I guess that is 3 sides...
One school of thought is that preschoolers should be using real tools for play instead of toy copies.  In this example, we used real apples.  It would have been easier to use plastic ones, but less realistic.   Another school of thought is that we should be using our imagination, and selling pretend apples.  That works great for some kids, but other just need a little more concrete of an experience.

So, back to the money.  We needed some.  We could pretend we had some, use the real stuff, or in this case, make some!  Mrs. Rae and I gathered up all of the cash we had and placed it on the table.  We used magnifying glasses to look at the money carefully.  We noted what was special on each bill.  We saw letters, numbers, important people, and buildings.

We noted the shape and colors. The boys and girls made their requests and I found the items that they needed to make their money: green pencil, white paper, scissors.

They got right to work.  This fellow wrote the number word one.

He included a picture of his "Pa" (an important person) on the front of the bill.
"See, Pa used to have a mustache, but he doesn't any more."

We filled that cash register up.  At one point, in addition to the ones working at the group table, I noticed children making coins in the writing center and green bills in the art center. They were so focused and engaged.  Yes, it would have been simple to hand out plastic money, and perfectly fine, but for today I made the right decision.  This one exercise had us talking shapes, colors, numbers, letters, value, presidents, cutting straight and curved lines, thinking and imagining.  Facilitating has never been more fun!

Then, M says, we need a gift card.  This time Mrs. Rae and I came up short.  We had to settle for a MVP card.  M inspected it and decided we needed plastic to make a gift card.  I found a notebook divider that would suffice, and we made gift cards.  I love their ideas and they feel free to exercise them.

After a long day at work, it was time to close up shop.  The boys turned the sign with the promise that we would open again tomorrow.  Can't wait to see what they come up with next!
