Trash or Treasure?

This week we have been spending time noticing helpers in our community.  For preschoolers, understanding their place in the world is all about the here and now.  They really have no concept of city, state, country, continent, planet... They understand that community is where they live, work, and play.  Our experiences in our community help children build on the idea of their place in the world, that they will come to fully understand in the next few years.

This week we are reading the book Trashy Town.  It is a great story about a sanitation worker and his job.  It is a simple story that really helps children understand the importance of that job.  We imagined what it would be like if the trash truck never came to school to get our garbage.  We also talked about how we could generate less garbage, and in turn reduce the trash that goes to the landfill.

This trash discussion brought us to my teacher led literacy center for the week: Trash or Treasure.

We pretended that things had gotten all mixed up.  The trash ( nonsense words) were mixed up with the treasure (words with meaning).  Our job was to sort it all out.

We took turns pulling words from the pile.

Then we sounded them out.  If it was a real word, we saved it.

If it was a non-sense word, we trashed it.
What a terrific time we had learning together!

Want to play at home?  You can do it too, with many concepts.  You could make letters treasure and random symbols be trash.  You could also do it with shapes and numerals.
