Olympics Day 2

Gymnastics day began with us reading the story of Nadia: The Girl who Couldn't' Sit Still, and watching Gabby Douglas' gold medal balance beam routine!

The children were amazed by what she could do!

We tried it ourselves, first forward, then backward!

Next,, it was on to floor!

JJ was our guest instructor for tumbling today.

She taught us the forward roll,  rocking horse, log roll, and crab walk.

We learned exercises that will help us develop our large and small muscles!

Finally, after an award winning performance...

it was time for the medal ceremony.

Silver York peppermint patties for our medalists,
complete with the National Anthem.

All of that tumbling had us hungry!  Today we snacked on dumbbells made from cookies and pretzels.  Gymnasts have to get strong to do all of their tricks.

Today we learned about the Olympic mascots.  There is one for each of the games, usually based on a characteristic of the location. The Salt Lake City games used mascots that represented their natural resources.  Rio has developed a mascot that combines many of their animals in to one creature- Vinicius.

Today we charged our campers with making a mascot that would represent our Sunshine Games.
They came up with some really neat ideas.  A made this "hot shot", which certainly represents our active Sunshine kids!

H made a "golden trophy'".

And R developed this creature.

The last event for us today was rhythmic gymnastics.

We made our own ribbon wands, watched a performance, then recreated some of the moves we saw the Olympic athletes doing on the smart board!

Tomorrow, we play ball!
